my vintage watches

The 30-second summary.

This Nivada Grenchen is reminisce of the early 60s where explorers trotted the globe in search of the unknown. It presents many likable aspects in a watch in an seldom seen square case, one that the collectot of oddities will appreciate.

What's so special about the watch?

The dial was what caught my eye - easily one of the best and most alluring I've seen in my years of collecting. The watch also wears nicely with its 20mm lug width, perhaps an emphasis that it's not a simple dress watch but one meant for the explorer in all of us.

What are the functions of the watch?

The best way to appreciate a dial like this is with a time-only watch.

Let me tell you about the case...

The watch comes in a square case, short lugs allowing it to sit really nicely on the wrist. The 20mm lug width is reflective of sports watches, giving you a myriad of strap options that will suit your explorer fancy.

Not forgetting that advenruting is a gentleman's sport, the case curves slightly inwards to the crown and then out again to the lug, something fancy that also allows for the crown to be kept within the width of the watch in a crown guard-like manner.

Behind, the watch case back is screwed down, testiment to the water proofing of the watch. I've never felt the need to open the screws and look at the movement, so I can't really vouch if the screws are rusted.

Overall the case is of a good condition, the usual small scratches from everyday use can be see around the case. There are no major gashes or dings that'll take away your enjoyment of the watch case. The first owner is probably a careful explorer.

And now the dial...

A wood-like texture greets the eye who glances at this dial, gold and a light brown dancing alluringly on the surface. A slight patina has gathered, mixing a darker tint onto the already beautiful canvas.

Away from the textured dial are applied indices - a 3, 6, 9, 12 arrangement that's typical of an explorer (wink). The rest of the indices are indicative of the name of the watch - icicle-like arrowheads point towards the center, their faceted surfaces adding more complexity to the dial layout. At the root of each icicle is a solid lume plot, matched to the ones on the dagger hands.

The dial condition is perfect, nary a scratch or flaw. The watch has probably never been serviced.

Let's not forget the hands...

What adventure is complete without a pair of daggers?! Broad points give ample space for the application of that early tritium, turning a dark tangerine from age.
