The 30-second summary.
The DX seems to be a special line of Seikos made with a sense of class in mind. This one in particular has the classic black-gold combination down to an art, juxtoposing the vertical brushing on its cusion case with the horizontal ones on its dial.
What's so special about the watch?
The 70s saw an explosion of funky case designs and daring patterns on the dial, mixing the traditional sense of design with a style that's never yet been seen in the decades to come. Huge applied indices that resemble precious stones, uncommon case shapes, a general contradiction in consensus on what makes a dress watch - all these took a tumble down that 70s period and came out awesome.
This piece was made at the cusp of that transition, where a 60s suave relented to the radical groove of the 70s in a funky and posh off-spring.
What are the functions of the watch?
Time and date.
Let me tell you about the case...
They chose a cushion case resembling the tube. They chose short lugs at 20mm to give the band some girth. They chose short sharp lugs to emphasize the case and dial. On the case was vertical brushing because it runs the line of sight from when you twist your wrist to see the time, no doubt stopping to admire the wonderfully designed dial. A smooth bezel with sharp bevels pops above the case, abruptly introducing the dome acrylic crystal and the slate grey dial within it.
This watch's case is in great condition, it's plating lasted through the ages with nary a deep scratch. The sides of the case, when under a loupe's scrutiny, has worn off a little, exposing the stainless steel layer underneath. Apart from that, the caseback Sea Lion has escaped weathering and remains deeply etched onto the back.
And now the dial...
The highlight of every watch, this dial combines the classiness of a horizontal brushed grey slate with the absurd oddities of large applied square cross-link indices and an array of gold lines printed across it. A single silver band in the middle holds most of the information - the Seiko logo applied at 9 above a bold cut day window; a gold frame over the date window with the Automatic and 23 Jewels printed beside it.
Let's not forget the hands...
In true dress watch style, polished bevel sword hands in the same gold hue sweep the charismatic dial.
