my vintage watches

The 30-second summary.

As a lover of vintage watches, I can't remember a time when a Navitimer hasn't been on my list of must haves. And that feeling when I finally landed this beast was majestic.

What's so special about the watch?

The Breitling Navitimer was the quintessential pilot's tool - a navigation timer watch that allowed them to make quick calculations while at the helm. Along with its large size and awesome aesthetics (who doesn't love a good reverse panda dial?), the Breitling Navitimer soon became a must-have.

In 1967 Breitling tossed out the 816 - a jumbo sized Navitimer that would have shocked the watch world with its considerable 49m case. It's large dial allowed for easier reading of the digits, and its unusual hands on the three subdials were an instant classic.

What are the functions of the watch?

Time, Venus 178 column wheel chronograph with 30-minute and 12-hour register.

Let me tell you about the case...

Despite the large size, the watch wears remarkably well with a slim profile, paired with a flat crown and short pushers that are well designed into the sides. The rotating calculation bezel is also integrated nicely, remaining relatively easy to manipulate while not adding to the overall heft of the watch.

And now the dial...

Holy aged black patina, Batman! This 0816 has a magnificently aged dial that sees freckles, fading lume and age spots come together in vintage symphony. The white on the dial has faded to a dark cream, matching the grey patches of dirt that has gathered over the years.

Like wine, this dial has aged beautifully and is ready for appreciation. The calculation markings are clear and distinct, and the fading of part of the index and Arabic numerals adds to the charm.

Let's not forget the hands...

Time telling is denoted by a set of bright white hands, while chronograph functions are lit red by a sweeping central seconds and two rectangular sub-dial register hands.
