The 30-second summary.
This watch came at me out of nowhere. The deep black dial and it's caramel lume make the perfect combination for someone who just adores the vintage feel. Add in the ghost blue bezel and you've got a triple whammy in the looks department.
What's so special about the watch?
As someone with a small wrist, finding a diver's watch that'll look good on my hands can be really hard. This skin diver has just what it takes in terms of looks AND size.
What are the functions of the watch?
Time and date, with unidirectional elasped time bezel.
Let me tell you about the case...
The slim case features an asymmetrical case, where extended crown guards protrude sharply from the left to make the long crown stand out. Polished lugs extend to the sides of the circular case, tucked neatly underneath the coin edged bezel.
The lugs slope gently down to fit the contours of your wrist, allowing the flat screw-secured caseback to sit comfortably on your wrist instead of being rocked left and right from too aligned with the lugs. When you have the watch on, you'll observe the long lugs and the crown guards floating beneath the bezel, letting the rest of the dial do its thing.
This particular example is well-used, the inside of the lugs bearig the scars of strap change. Minor scratches are also visible across the case, which is fine by me. The aluminum bezel has faded to a nice grey-blue, more signs of use sliced across its surface.
One point to note however, is that the center lume marker at the bezel's 12 does not align with the rehaut. This could be from the previous service, and I didn't see a need to fix it.
And now the dial...
An impossibly black dial sits inside a raised black-gold rehaut, both of which hare gilt with a perfect coat of paint. A quick peek with the loupe will leave you wanting more, and for that you simply have to turn your attention to the hour markers.
A combination of Arabic and stick batons indices were chosen to represent this watch, each of them bordered by a nice gold surround. The lume has gathered a caramel patina, matching the gilt on the dial to a tee.
And once (or if) you're ever done with the indices, you take note of the black dial - a certain gloss is spread onto its surface, but it never seems to reflect any light. Instead reflections are sucked into the dial, further segmenting the gilt print and leaving you with a sense of awe that can only be derived from such an awesome time piece.
Let's not forget the hands...
The diver's watch has mercedes hands, filled with the same colored lume as the indices. A lollipop seconds sweeps the dial with the same consistent swatch that makes this watch so much a desire to own.
