my vintage watches

The end of an era

Legacy is what you leave for the next generation, and the memories that you imprint in their minds. I share a story of my journey in vintage, a man I met, and how these watches came into my possession and onto this here store shelf.

Somewhere in a quiet corner of Singapore I once ventured. I remember the day clearly - it was Lunar New Year and I was visiting Chinatown with the family. It was a warm day and we decided to take shelter in a nearby building.

The glass doors swung open with effort, the air inside gushing out cooling our faces as we all took a deep breath away from the heat outside. The building was old - most of the stores were closed, their 'for rent' banners dog-earred and tarnished from stagnant neglect.

There was a lift - one of those bubble types that let you look outside. The call button stood solitary on the top of a single steel tube. Next to the tube a directory stood erected, its face filled with empty lines of black, the occassional white text stickered on. One of the lines stood out - Ray's Vintage Watch.

I swung open another glass door a few minutes later, opening not just the door to Mr Wong's shop but also to an endearing journey filled with vintage watches and coffee chats. Many of the things I know about vintage came from him, and I do my best to share what I know with those who come here.

In January of 2022, Mr Wong retired and closed the doors of his story after more than 30 years in the vintage watch scene in Singapore. Any collector worth his salt here will know of his name, and would have been to his store and heard his counsel some time in their own journeys.

With the final click of the lock, many would-be collector would lose the chance to browse his wares or learn more about vintage watches from this veteran collector.

I am fortunate to be able to befriend Mr Wong, and have been entrusted with some of the watches from the store to present to you here. The modest selection reflects his humble approach to the hobby, something that he has made a passion and legacy of.

For your consideration please.
