What's so special about the watch?
There are a lot of homage watches out there now, but before they were a thing there was Steinhart who were known for the quality of the make and the exquisiteness of their design. I mean, they all look like some vintage watch that looks like a Rolex, but there's the few like Steinhart who manages to get the proportions right.
What are the functions of the watch?
Let me tell you about the case...
To say Steinhart's catalog of vintage homages is extensive is an understatement. But among all those designs the Ocean Vintage Military 39 stands out with its smaller case size that sits on my small wrist really well.
One of the main draws of the watch is the historically accurate 39mm sizing. This size allows the lugs to be designed to hover just above the edge of the wrist and the first link to hang right down onto the sides. The bracelet tapers to a nice 16mm too, which is really cool for smaller wrist and also makes the case wear larger.
One thing unique about this watch that makes it stand out from a new piece straight from the store, or any old used one, is the lume pip on the bezel. It's somehow turned a bright pumpkin - perhaps an accumulation of frustration from being cooped up in the cupboard for so long at a time.
This example was bought straight off the first owner, who liked what he saw and got it direct from Gnomon's physical store in Singapore. The case and bracelet is in exceptional condition because both of us really have too many watches to go between us. Take a look at the macro shots for an idea of the condition of the case, bracelet and clasp.
And now the dial...
Steinhart did a nice number on this dial - the indices are nicely plastered with lume, and the markings have a nice round edge to them from the printing. There's a lot of effort put into how it will look when someone inevitably compares it to the original, and they're not really far off.
Let's not forget the hands...
Matching lume on the hands and dial go really well together, and kudos to Steinhart once again for applying such a nice even coat on the large broad sword hands.
